January Chisaayaaskunibiisim Month of bitter cold
Extreme cold weather starts in this month.
February Baabiwaasikunicisiiubiisim Month of severe storms
This month is called mighty or old month. In modern Cree, it is also called the short month
March Michisiiubiisim Eagle Month
The northward migration of eagles takes place this month.
April Nischibiisim Goose month
The geese start to migrate into the area in mid or late month.
May Aasimwaakubiisim Loon month
Red throated loons migrate into the area.
June Saachipikaanibiisim Month of Growth
This is the month when everything starts to grow, to bloom and to reproduce.
July Piskubiisim Moulting Month
During this month, not only geese, but many animals, including beaver and black bears, moult or lose their feathers or fur.
August Upahuubiisim Month of the flight of Young Geese
The young geese born that year start to fly.
September Uushkihuubiisim Month of caribou scratching velvet of antlers
During this month, caribou rub off the velvet-like material covering their antlers. Once the antlers are cleaned, they become more handsome and start looking for a mate.
October Wiisaakubiisim Caribou Mating Month
The mating of caribou takes place during this month.
November Kishidinipiisim Month of Freeze up
The weather gets cold enough that lakes become frozen over.
December Mikusaachiskinibiisim Feasting Month
The month of getting ready for the winter. This is the month of feasting and good time. People get up an appetite, eat rich food, get ready for the really cold months. In modern Cree, Christmas Month.
